Streatley Youth Hostel - Help Needed!
Streatley Youth Hostel has been put on the market for sale again by the Youth Hostel Association after a concerted local campaign to save it.
The hostel has been providing low cost overnight accommodation to visitors to the Goring Gap for the past 90 years. The hostel, Hill House, is owned and operated by the Youth Hostel Association (YHA), having been donated by a Streatley resident in the 1930s to provide affordable holidays for those living in poverty.
The hostel has been very successful over the years, hosting school parties and student groups from all over the world, private family reunions and walkers along the Ridgeway and Thames Path National Trails. Its unique position, easy access to Oxford and London by train and road has made it a popular location. It is currently profitable, with a high occupancy rate - but it is in need of refurbishment.
Friends of Streatley YHA are looking to buy and manage the hostel as a franchise of the YHA. We also want to develop the hostel into a community hub cafe and cycle centre ...and have other ideas. We are fortunate in having some local residents that are specialist in property and estate management who have come forward to help. We are exploring various options for purchase and operation. Our current proposal is to set up a company to purchase the house from the YHA and own the freehold and then establish a separate charity to operate the hostel. The company would issue shares and, as it would own the freehold, shareholders would also be co-owners in the property and have their investment protected.
